Part A of Joseph's  life Points 7-8 Joseph put into prison and his interpretation of the dreams of pharaoh's baker and butler

Points 7 - 8 will be under these headings.
Point - 7 Joseph put into prison.
Point - 8 Interpretation of the Chief Baker’s and the Chief Butler’s dreams.

Point - 7 Joseph put into prison.
Joseph was then sold by the Ishmaelites into Potiphar’s household where he prospered and his master trusted him with everything.
However Potiphar’s wife had other ideas and wanted Joseph to sleep with her of which he refused to do so and kept refusing to do so.
Until one day she had her revenge and managed to corner him in the house when they were alone and again pressured him to sin by lying with her. Again he refused he fled from her but when he fled he left his garment behind as she had grabbed hold of it.
She kept it by her and made up a lie about Joseph having his way with her.  So Potiphar put Joseph into the prison of Pharaoh as he was the captain of Pharaoh’s guard it was not like the other prisons it was Pharaoh’s own prison connected to the king.  In other words it was a military or political prison.
This event is covered in Genesis 39:1-19
Both Joseph and Jesus were tempted Jesus was tempted by the devil Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13  and Joseph tempted by Potiphar's wife as given in the account below.
Genesis 39:1-22 picking up from 7-22
7 Then after a time his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph, and she said, Lie with me.
8 But he refused and said to his master's wife, See here, with me in the house my master has concern about nothing; he has put all that he has in my care.
9 He is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept anything from me except you, for you are his wife. How then can I do this great evil and sin against God?
10 She spoke to Joseph day after day, but he did not listen to her, to lie with her or to be with her.
11 Then it happened about this time that Joseph went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the men of the house were indoors.
12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me! But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out [of the house].
13 And when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled away,
14 She called to the men of her household and said to them, Behold, he [your master] has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock and insult us; he came in where I was to lie with me, and I screamed at the top of my voice.
15 And when he heard me screaming and crying, he left his garment with me and fled and got out of the house.
16 And she laid up his garment by her until his master came home.
17 Then she told him the same story, saying, The Hebrew servant whom you brought among us came to me to mock and insult me.
18 And when I screamed and cried, he left his garment with me and fled out [of the house].
19 And when [Joseph's] master heard the words of his wife, saying to him, This is the way your servant treated me, his wrath was kindled.
20 And Joseph's master took him and put him in the prison, a place where the state prisoners were confined; so he was there in the prison.
21 But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy and loving-kindness and gave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison.
22 And the warden of the prison committed to Joseph's care all the prisoners who were in the prison; and whatsoever was done there, he was in charge of it.
23 The prison warden paid no attention to anything that was in [Joseph's] charge, for the Lord was with him and made whatever he did to prosper.

Again God allowed this, Joseph was a slave first of all in Egypt which is what was going to happen to Abraham’s descendants through Jacob they were going to live in Egypt then end up being slaves I will talk about this in more detail later.
Then he became a political prisoner for a number of years, God kept him in Egypt until the iron entered his soul and He put Joseph through the furnace of affliction.
This was to prepare him for when he was called upon by God to lead Egypt as second in command under Pharaoh to save both Egypt and the surrounding nations along with his family from certain death by starvation. Psalm 105:16-23
16 Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread.
17 He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant:
18 Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron:
19 Until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him.
20 The king sent and loosed him; even the ruler of the people, and let him go free.
21 He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:
22 To bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his senators wisdom.
23 Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
God had plans for Joseph but before they were fulfilled he went through the valley of hardship and affliction and the dreams Joseph had may at times seem to him like they never will be fulfilled.
It may have seemed to Joseph at times that God was taking him down and not up and he was going further away from where he wanted to go.
Yet this is the way of the Lord He may lead us in a direction away from where we desire to go.
That the promises He gave us may look as though they are as good as dead and not ever going to come to life and we are going in the opposite direction to where we think we should be going.
Yet God has it all under control and He knows what He is doing and He will lead us the way He wants us to go to prepare us for the work He has for us.
So too Joseph had to learn obedience to God by what he had suffered.
As too Jesus had to learn obedience though a Son by what He had suffered.
So we too must learn obedience to Father by what we may go through and suffer to bring forth the sweet perfume of Christ to a lost and sin filled world.
Jesus was crushed in His death on the cross to bring forth the perfume of salvation and Joseph was crushed by what he went through to bring forth the perfume of salvation from famine and to learn wisdom by what he was going through.

Point - 8 Interpretation of the Chief Baker’s and the Chief Butler’s dreams
  • This sets the stage for Joseph to interpret Pharaoh’s dream and elevation to being Egypt’s Prime Minister.
  • The butler and baker were put into the State prison.  God saw to it that Pharaoh was angry with his two servants and that these men were put under Joseph's charge and they were in the prison for some time.
  • When the time was right for them to dream the dreams they had God gave them the dreams close to the time of Pharaoh's birthday.  So that Joseph can interpret the dreams and tell them exactly what will happen to each of them.
  • The dreams they both had came to pass exactly as Joseph said they would when he interpreted each man his dream.  These dreams were from God for He alone knows the future.
  • God gave the dreams to the butler and the baker so that Joseph can tell each man what will happen to him and when the were released from prison.  The butler was reinstated and the baker was hung.
  • Though Joseph told the butler to remember him and tell Pharaoh about him being held in prison unjustly.  God caused the butler to forget Joseph until the time was right for him to remember him which would not be for another two years when Pharaoh was to have dreams of his own sent by God.  More on this in points 9-10.
Genesis 40:1-23
1 NOW SOME time later the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their lord, Egypt's king.
2 And Pharaoh was angry with his officers, the chief of the butlers and the chief of the bakers.
3 He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined.
4 And the captain of the guard put them in Joseph's charge, and he served them; and they continued in custody for some time.
5 And they both dreamed a dream in the same night, each man according to [the personal significance of] the interpretation of his dream--the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison.
6 When Joseph came to them in the morning and looked at them, he saw that they were sad and depressed.
7 So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were in custody with him in his master's house, Why do you look so dejected and sad today?
8 And they said to him, We have dreamed dreams, and there is no one to interpret them. And Joseph said to them, Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me [your dreams], I pray you.
9 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph and said to him, In my dream I saw a vine before me,
10 And on the vine were three branches. Then it was as though it budded; its blossoms burst forth and the clusters of them brought forth ripe grapes [almost all at once].
11 And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup; then I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
12 And Joseph said to him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days.
13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will again put Pharaoh's cup into his hand, as when you were his butler.
14 But think of me when it shall be well with you and show kindness, I beg of you, to me, and mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this house.
15 For truly I was carried away from the land of the Hebrews by unlawful force, and here too I have done nothing for which they should put me into the dungeon.
16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, I also dreamed, and behold, I had three cake baskets on my head.
17 And in the uppermost basket were some of all kinds of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds [of prey] were eating out of the basket on my head.
18 And Joseph answered, This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days.
19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head but will have you beheaded and hung on a tree, and [you will not so much as be given burial, but] the birds will eat your flesh.
20 And on the third day, Pharaoh's birthday, he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the heads of the chief butler and the chief baker [by inviting them also] among his servants.
  21 And he restored the chief butler to his butlership, and the butler gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand;
22 But [Pharaoh] hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
23 But [even after all that] the chief butler gave no thought to Joseph, but forgot [all about] him.

Next post will be the final post for Part A of Joseph's life we will end with points 9-11 where Joseph interpret's Pharaoh's dreams.
Pharoah is so impressed with Joseph's wisdom and discretion as well as his ability to interpret his dreams he sets Joseph as second in charge over Egypt. Joseph is also given a wife to whom he has two sons.
